RED MEAT LINKED TO HIGHER RISK OF PREMATURE DEATH.

You may be Dying; but, You're Still "Lovin it."
The Department of Health was last night urged to review its guidance on red meat, after a study found that eating only half the daily recommended amount can significantly increase the risk of dying early from cancer or heart disease.

The study analysed the diet, health, and death data on 37, 698 men and 83, 644 women. All participants completed questionnaires about their diets, every four years. During the study follow-up period of more than two decades, almost 24, 000 of the participants died, including 5, 910 from heart disease and 9, 464 from cancer.

To determine the risk of eating unprocessed meat or processed meat, the researchers factored out other lifestyle factors, including age, weight, physical activity, family history of heart disease, and dietary factors such as intake of whole grains, fruit and vegetables, nuts, legumes, dairy products, fish and poultry.

Eating one serving a day of unprocessed red meat (about the size of a deck of playing cards) was associated with a 13 per cent increased risk on premature death; eating one serving a day of processed red meat (one frankfurter/hot dog or two slices of bacon, or equivalent amounts of beef sausage, Bologna, farmer's sausage, cured ham, luncheon meat, pepperoni, Italian Pizza sausage, pork breakfast sausage, salami, summer sausage) was associated with a 20 per cent increased risk of premature death.

Other studies have linked eating red meat and/or processed meats to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. However, we must remember that this type of study shows association, which does not necessarily mean causation. It is also interesting to note that similar research and studies of the effects of consuming one "sugar drink" a day have come up with fairly similar results.

To complicate matters, meat contains a lot of urokinase protein and urea, which add to the burden on the kidneys, and can destroy kidney function. There are approximately fourteen grams of urokinase protein in every pound of fresh meat and steak. if living cells are put into liquid urokinase protein, their metabolic function will degenerate, Furthermore, meat lacks cellulose or fibre, and lack of fibre creates constipation; it is known that constipation can cause rectal cancer or piles, and that it can kill you.
